Afghan Governor Denies Corruption Allegations - Corruption Currents - WSJ


A powerful Afghan governor who U.S. officials accused of “systemic corruption” denied the allegations through a spokesman, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the spokesman for Gul Agha Shirzai, told reporters in Jalalabad that the allegations, which were reported over the weekend by The Journal, were aimed at derailing Shirzai’s presidential aspirations.

“Since the announcement of the date for the presidential election, a number of domestic and foreign media outlets have been trying to denigrate political figures and Wall Street Journal is one of them,” Abdulzai said, according to the Journal report, which quoted Pajhwok news agency.
