A young woman I know who recently graduated college came to me looking for advice on trying to get something she submitted to a reputable media organization’s website finally published.

She struck an agreement with the publication, traveled to Eastern Europe to complete the assignment and submitted her work on deadline. And then heard nothing for more than a week.

The woman didn’t know where to turn. She had emailed her point of contact and received no response.

She came to me for advice, and we discussed it last night over beers.

My only counsel, because I have no freelance experience, was to call her contacts at the publication, and while on the phone be positive, firm and fight for her work.

She told me this afternoon that her work is getting published under her byline.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud of being a mentor.
