Mary Schapiro, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, announced Monday she would be stepping down.
Her decision will mark the end of a turbulent and trying period for the agency, which was reeling after the emergence of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme.
Schapiro will officially step down Dec. 14.
A career regulator, she is credited by current and former SEC officials with steadying the agency after its failure to spot the Madoff fraud.
