Treasury Puts Sanctions on Hawala Operator - Corruption Currents - WSJ

The U.S. Treasury Department said Tuesday it placed sanctions on the operator of a hawala used by the Taliban.

Mullah Ahmed Shah Noorza, or Ahmed Shah, owns and operates the Roshan Money Exchange, or RMX, which was placed under U.S. sanctions in June 2012 for providing financial services to the Taliban. It’s also under United Nations sanctions.

RMX was, as of 2011, one of the primary hawalas, or money exchange houses, used by Taliban members to support their narcotics operations, Treasury said.
